Ceramic materials have been used successfully for medial implants for many years. In particular, alumina and zirconia are established as suitable materials for femoral heads in total hip replacements. Yttria stabilised zirconia has excellent mechanical properties in terms of strength, toughness and wear (against UHMWPE), however, there has been some concern about the long term stability of the tetragonal crystal structure under aqueous conditions.The objective of the proposed work programme is to develop a ceramic material which would increase the lifetime of a femoral head by up to 10 years. This material will be based on first generation yttria established tetragonal zirconia polycrystel (Y-TZP) which is currently being used successfully and has excellent mechanical properties in terms of strength, toughness and wear (against UHMWPE). However, there has been some concern about the long term stability of the tetragonal crystal structure aqueous condiments. The purpose of this work would be to develop second generation zirconia materials with superior properties by modifying existing zirconias with additives and carefully controlled processing conditions.
