Summary on Grant Application Form
After modifying our existing cluster source to provide a ten-fold increase in flux, we will use it to manufacture assemblies of mass-selected nanoscale (1 - 10 nm) magnetic particles embedded in Cu, Ag, Pd and V matrices. These will be made by co-depositing particles from the cluster source and metal from an MBE vapour source onto a substrate held in an ultra-high vacuum chamber. Films up to 200A thick will be deposited in the dedicated UHV chamber in Leicester and capped with a thin (20A) layer of Cu or Ag to allow removal from the vacuum system and to carry out ex situ magneto-resistance measurements (in collaboration with York) and magnetometry measurements (in collaboration with IPCMS, Strasbourg). The cluster source will also be transported to the SRS at Darebury to produce films in situ for study using magnetic circular or linear dichroism and X ray diffraction.
