Summary on Grant Application Form
Gross solids cause maintenance problems of deposition and blockages in sewers, generate 'aesthetic' pollution via combined sewer overflows in rivers and on beaches, and are implicated in operational problems at wastewater treatment plants. Under the Urban Pollution Management programme, models have been developed to allow the UK water industry to improve the management for urban water quality. However, these models do not include gross solids, and consequently do not address the form of water pollution that consistently causes most offence to the public. The aim of this project is to produce a technical representation of the origin, transport, temporary storage, breakdown and fate of gross solids to complement and extend industry-standard computer models. Studies will involve collation of existing information on gross solids' inputs to sewers, laboratory determination of their characteristics and physical degradation traceable ( smart ) surrogate solids through an operating sewer system, and the development of a computer model of gross solids' behaviour in sewers.
