Mass spectrometry is established as the detection method of choice in chromatography, whenever the highest degree of confidence is required in identification of compounds. The range and scope of applications of gas chromatography requiring high-confidence identifications are increasing, particularly with new environmental regulations being introduced, but expansion in the use of mass spectrometry in this context is limited by considerations of cost and sensitivity. Detection of herbicides such as triazines in water and detection of trace impurities in gases are examples of areas where mass spectrometry is increasingly required. The need is to enhance the sensitivity of mass spectrometres, while lowering their cost. The proposal here is to achieve these objectives through the use of an appropriate permanent magnetic field as a mass separator, coupled with novel CCD array technology.
