Summary on Grant Application Form
Powders are frequently agglomerated to promote their handleability and flowability but subsequent degradation due to impact attrition and fracture during handling and processing is a common problem in process engineering. The consequences are that operational parameters are altered and the productions of fines can lead to loss of valuable material and environmental problems. The agglomerates are normally of millimetre size and collision durations of the order of milliseconds. It is, therefore, very difficult to obtain detailed quantitative informations are not restricted by such small time and length scales. The research proposal is to extend our previous work on numerical simulations of agglomerate collisions to (A) simulate spherical, cuboidal and cylindrical agglomerates in order to examine shape effects, (B) examine how the degradation phenomena scale with the yield stress, modulus and solid fraction of the agglomerates, and (C) extend previous research on coarse-grained agglomerates by varying the ratio of agglomerate to primary particle size in order to examine the damage/fracture process in fine -grained agglomerates.
