Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a linked application from Imperial College and RAL to continue the very successful work on the interaction of intense, short pulse lasers with solid targets. The upgrades presently being undertaken on the VULCAN and TITANIA laser enable experiments on the interaction of sub-picosecond pulses at unprecedented intensity values. All the experimental and diagnostic techniques which we developed and successfully employed in our previous work will be used again. Some minor refinements and extensions are envisaged, e.g. angular sensitive neutron spectroscopy to characterise energetic ions in the target and Faraday rotation of optical probes to determine magnetic fields.
