Summary on Grant Application Form
Computer time on the Cray J90 at RAL is sought to carry out two projects. Project 1 will extend the direct numerical simulation (DNS) method to turbulent diffusion flames with reduced kinetic mechanisms. The aim is to enhance our fundamental understanding of phenomena such as turbulence-flame interaction, local flame extinction, auto-ignition and radical formation, which have baring on fire safety, emission control and fuel economy. Effects of heat release, the Lewis number and the Damkholer number will be considered. Project 2 is a continuation of a PhD programme (under grant GR/J 13502 and a CASE studentship from BAe) to generate DNS data for the receptivity of blunt leading edges to free stream vortical and acoustic disturbances. The data will be used for improving the accuracy of transition prediction models used in aerospace industry.
