Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to extend work on condensation heat transfer at Queen Mary and Westfield College to include condensation inside tubes. An existing apparatus, currently used for measurements with condensation on the outside of plain and finned tubes, will be adapted. The experience gained in condensation heat transfer over many years will be used in the design of the new apparatus. Measurements (both heat transfer and pressure drop) for condensation of pure vapours, non-azeotropic mixtures and from vapour-non-condensing gas mixtures will be made and used to develop and validate improved models for predicting the performance of tube-side condensers. Measurements will also be made with various internal heat-transfer enhancement techniques to evaluate their effectiveness and to develop approximate prediction methods. Tests will be done using vertical tubes with vapour upflow and downflow. Tests will also be conducted using horizontal tubes.
