Summary on Grant Application Form
The hydrodynamic instability of flames will be studied using an accurate numerical approach to examine the fully nonlinear second-order effect of vorticity production. Closely related particle image velocimetry experiments will be used to obtain detailed corresponding information from real flames for comparison. The primary objective is to understand the role of vorticity production in the unstable dynamics of laminar flames. This understanding will be used to extend the findings to self-turbulisation of flames which has been observed experimentally and in numerical simulations of weakly nonlinear models.
