Summary on Grant Application Form
Novel macrocyclic esters will be synthesised by the cyclo-depolymerisation of polyesters. Preliminary experiments indicate that yields of cyclic products will be ca. 70%. The formation of the macrocycles is a reversible process and by carrying out the syntheses in the presence of an appropriate template yields of individual cyclics will be raised. By using mixtures of polymers or copolymers combinatorial libraries of macrocycles will be synthesised. The libraries will have applications in molecular recognition. They will be screened by a novel method using polymer-supported species. It is hoped to be able to extend the method to the synthesis of macrocyclic carbamates, amides and acetals.
