Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work aims to formulate a surface-yield model for crack tip plasticity in three-dimensional crack problems which is analagous to the strip-yield models which have produced a number of authors for two-dimensional geometries. Displacement discontinuity eigenstrain elements will be used to model both the crack and the plasticity. The work will concentrate on a number of characteristic geometries of increasing complexity and the results obtained will be compared to finite and other known solutions. The completed model should provide a useful tool for analysis of plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure.
