The purpose of the project is to build a real-time system that can convert pictures into sounds. Such a system is called an optohone. It has been shown theoretically that sufficient information can be preserved in the transformation for a human to be able to learn to understand the sounds and consequently be able to see. A real-time system would enable this hypothesis to be tested. Furthermore, a real-time system will allow experiments to be carried out on human subjects. The aim of these experiments is to optimise the human's ability to learn by refining the methods that have been proposed.
