Summary on Grant Application Form
A new catalytic combustor design is proposed which does not require fuel-air premixing. It is based on the use of monoliths with permeable walls. A single-channel monlith reactor will be used. Air and fuel will flow separately in opposite sides of the monolith wall reacting on the catalytic sites present inside the wall. For the new flow configuration, the effect of the operating and design parameters which include reactant flowrates, fuel/air ratio, inlet temperatures, and catalyst mass transfer properties, on combustion system perfomance and its operability limits will be studied. A mathematical model will be developed which, in connection with the experimental work, will be used to analyse and elucidate the effect of the reactant contacting pattern on catalyst system performance and operation.
