Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to transform the error-prone and often frustrating tasks of measuring customers rooms and, thereafter, of ensuring satisfactory delivery of fitted and soft furnishings ordered. At its heart is the automation of measurement and visualisation of the site, both before and after the planned sale. The innovative step is the ability to replace conventional measurement techniques (e.g. tapes and rules). Instead a set of images of a site acquired from different viewpoints is captured using standard solid state camera. Once captured, the system will rapidly compute a three-dimensional representation of the scene. This is available for immediate or subsequent analysis, reworking or checking, including the visibility of all dimensions. The project involves UK based world leaders in both basic research and commercial innovation of computer-base measurement and visualisation techniques:*Oxford University will develop the measurement software*Thorn EMI CRL Ltd. will ensure the systems integration (including system and user interface design), overall project management and early commercial implementation. The project shows particularly strong coherence with Foresight Challenge criteria, both in general and in Retail Panel specific issues.
