Soliton transmission is of much interest for overcoming dispersion in high bit-rate unrepeatered trans-oceanic systems. However amplifier noise leads to Gordon-Haus jitter in the pulse arrival times whilst interaction with other solitons and non-soliton radiation can disrupt transmission. In this proposal a new soliton control technique, using multiple quantum well (MQW) saturable absorbers, is presented. Amongst other advantages the new technique enables the optical amplifier spacing to be increased substantially, with resulting potential for cost-reduction and reliability enhancement in deployed systems. The proposed research includes the design, fabrication and assessment of suitable absorbers, with initial evaluation in recirculating loop experiments leading to larger scale tests with industrial collaborators.
