The aim is to develop a special finite element model for all problems of wave diffraction governed by Helmholtz equation. This covers a large range of highly important problems, including the prediction electromagnetic wave behaviour, radar cross sections, acoustics and sonar. Unlike all earlier finite element methods the element size would be independent of the wavelength, so that problems with very short waves could be attempted. This will allow the economical computer modelling of a large range of wave problems, which are currently too large to be tackled: finite elements, short waves, radar, acoustics.
