A reduction of overhead power line dimensions is now widely sought on economic and environmental grounds. The stringent insulation conditions so incurred will require a deeper understanding than hitherto of the dielectric strength of the conductor and insulator configurations used. Experimental data on the sparkover between conductors and across insulators will be applied to practical design problems. Emphasis will be placed on the impulse voltage stressing of inter-electrode gaps which are already pre-stressed with a system voltage. This is the practical situation; first results suggest that working rules on practical clearances, derived from data without pre-stress, will need significant revision. Insulator configurations (phase-tower, tower windows etc) will also be used under pre-stress, to optimise tower design and coordinate with air-gap data. Parallel work on pre-breakdown process will facilitate understanding of dielectric strengths and permit theoretical modelling. Close collaboration with industrial sponsors is proposed.
