In all-optical networks wavelength dependent switching capability is a direct function of the number of individually addressable channel wavelengths. Concepts such as sparsely filled dense wavelength division multiplex (SFDWDM) exploit large numbers of channels to reduce blocking probability. Conventional approaches to channel generation become complex and costly where large numbers of addressable channels are required. We propose the use of optical comb generators with injection locked channel selection using semi-conductor lasers as a simple means of generating a large number (> 200) of channels, with frequency error determined only by the reference signals provided. The comb generation techniques use semiconductor or fibre gain media, with multiple quantum well phase modulators driven at microwave frequency to generate channels at the required spacing. The proposal entails modelling and construction of the comb generator, detailed evaluation of the injection locked channel selection and systems test.
