Summary on Grant Application Form
There is no reliable data of knee forces, available data being derived in the 1960s using an indirect method. Our proposal is to measure the force directly using an instrumental total knee replacement. (The complete project was to develop the instrumental total knee, to implant in a patient and compare direct data with calculated data from gait studies. But the applicants were asked EPSRC to carry out in vitro development first). The tibial component will have an inter cavity with strain gauges placed to detect axial force, varus-valgus moment, AP force as int.-ext. torque. Finite element analysis will be used to design the component for maximum sensitivity and fatigue strength. The component significantly to basic science, teach cruciate ligament function, injury conditions, total knee design including mensical be??? types, rehab. procedures including knee braces, effect of shoes, walking aids, testing for total knee and artificial ligaments with application to European/international standard.
