Summary on Grant Application Form
Building on ideas developed at Durham and elsewhere, we intend to continue investigating integrable quantum field theory. In particular, we seek a full understanding of the classical and quantum affine Toda field theory with boundaries which is up to now a surprisingly neglected area. We also seek to understand the weak-strong coupling duality symmetry exhibited by Toda theory and in particular, the mathematics underlying it. A complete account of this would provide and important paradigm since there are hints of similar symmetries elsewhere: for example, in supersymmetric gauge field theory and in string theory.
