This project aims to realise the potential for improvement by:1. Confirming the extent and causes of delays within and between construction sub-processes;2. Testing reliable, simple and quick methods of assessing productivity performance;3. Validating the scope for productivity improvement;4. Designing and implementing a strategy to improve the process and eliminate the causes of low productivity, and in particular;5. Demonstrating that improved planning leads to increased productivity;6. Developing a culture of cooperation among construction project participants (designer, contractor, sub-contractor and supplier), by focusing on the incidence and cause of construction delays and the development of an integrated approach to improving the process;7. Assessing the increase in productivity resulting from the implementation of the improvement strategies; and8. Disseminating the results widely so that the whole industry may benefit from the findings.The Southampton Facility has a record of research into silicon-based processes and devices going back at least 20 years during which time vast strides have been made in device and system performance. This rate of progress continues unabated, underpinning a multitude of applications in all walks of life. To continue solid research in this field requires continuing updating of equipment and processes which in turn requires a pool of skilled manpower. The proposal seeks continued funding of this infrastructure.
