Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will form part of a co-ordinated research programme into flow behaviour and sediment transport in meandering channels under inbank and overbank flow conditions. It will take place in the Flood Channel Facility (FCF) at HR Wallingford as an element of the Series C part of the EPSRC's Flood Channels Programme, following on the now successfully completed Series A and B work. The FCF affords unique opportunities in the UK to carry out these experiments at a scale which enables both channel and floodplain form, as well as grain transport behaviour, to be studied.A patricular element of this project is that graded sediments are to be used, rather than those of a single size. This is because an important feature of non-uniform, meandering flows in atural rivers is the sorting of sediment sizes. The project will increase our knowledge of flow behaviour in meandering two-stage channels with a mobile bed and its dependance on channel/floodplain geometry. The results will be used to produce practical guidelines for the design of more economic, effective and environmentally acceptable river works, such as flood protection schemes
