Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is concerned with the production of rare-earth doped silicon-rich silica as a photo- and electroluminescent material for displays and optoelectronics. Light emission from silicon-based material has long been a goal of the optoelectronics industry, the realisation of which would result in enormous benefits to both this and the electronics industry through true low-cost integration. We propose to continue the photoluminescence work we have undertaken in this field. We aim to demonstrate electroluminescence from silicon-rich silica, further our understanding of the underlying physics of this luminescence mechanism, develop a model for optical and eletrical properties based on our existing models. The target deliverables of this project will be (1) demonstrate electroluminescence in a prototype device and (2) exploit the photoluminescence properties of silicon-rich material for broad-band optically pumped devices.
