Summary on Grant Application Form
We intend to study the feasibility of integrating mobile multimedia terminals into multi-service networks. The applications in which we are interested have quality of service constraints which must be met if they are to function correctly. On the other hand, the fact that we intend these applications to work in a mobile environment means that, because there is a physical limit on the bandwidth available in a given cell, it is necessary to make resource allocation decisions in order to give a fair division of bandwidth.Based on experience with more general resource allocation mechanisms, we intend to adopt an approach to resource contention based on a microeconomic model. We will develop a calculus which can be used by the resource control mechanism to allocate bandwidth on a prioritised basis; this will be in terms that the user can easily comprehend. In order to make this function, we expect to develop interfaces both to the underlying signalling mechanisms and to the application level above in order to allow application-specific call degradation. Our methodology will be based on analysis and simulation. If circumstances permit, we will test our prototype in a mobile testbed.
