Summary on Grant Application Form
The Manchester Vibrating Sample Magnetometer Facility (MVSMF) has been operating for five years, principally supporting the work of four research groups in three HEIs in Manchester, with occasional use by other research groups, and through collaborations, industrial users. The present proposal seeks support to continue to provide this facility, and to develop it to increase its flexibility, and to improve the quality of data, with particular reference to better temperature and field measurement, and increased sensitivity of magnetisation measurements especially for thin-film samples. The range of uses includes materials characterisation for the magnetic recording industry, for the magnetic devices and electrical engineering industries, through a range of applied and pure studies in materials, physics and chemistry. We make the case that central support for this facility is more efficient and effective than fragmented support being channelled through each user's projects.
