The long-term aim of the research is to provide a theoretical basis for the computer-aided design of a new type of 4-port circulator based on a ferrite-coupled section in which the ferrite is magnetised parallel with the direction of propagation. The structures to be investigated are coupled microstrips and coupled slot-lines loaded with a magnetised ferrite layer. The concept has already been demonstrated experimentally, and the proposed work will provide a basis for component design. The potential advantages are:a) low applied magnetic field (small magnet),b) simple ferrite shapes and, by avoiding the need to insert the ferrite into the substrate costs are reduced, c) potentially a more attractive technology at short wavelengths than classical ferrite junction designs, andd) may lead to thin-film circulators which may be compatible with MMICs. It may provide one of the very few ways to compensate for the fact that the non-reciprocal behaviour inherently decreases as the signal frequency is increased at high microwave frequencies.
