Summary on Grant Application Form
A new form of electrical machine drive is proposed, incorporating a high-field permanent magnet motor and smart power electronics. The motor and drive circuits will be jointly optimised and the integrated drivers will incorporate protection and feedback elements to implement self-commutation. A novel feature of the proposed system is the large number of low power devices, directly connected to individual machine windings. This arrangement is expected to give a high efficiency, flexible and compact drive system with very low electromagnetic interference. In addition to designing and characterising the new machine, the investigation will study the problems of redundancy and reliability in the power devices and optimisation of rotor designs for self-commutation.
