Current processes for organic coil-coating rely on significant use of hexavalent chromium which has a serendipitous effect on corrosion inhibition and organic coating adhesion. However, there are increasing environmental problems with the use of chromates in the pre-treatment process, and as strontium chromate pigmented primers, it will be eventually necessary to replace these materials. The methodology will be to understand the role of chromate separately on the electrochemistry of corrosion at the cut edge. In addition, the role of chromate on initial organic coating adhesion to the substrate, and the effect of chromate on the electrochemical processes driving organic coating disbondment will be evaluated using, respectively, adhesion studies and scanning electrochemical probes. In this way models of the action of chromate can then be developed with reference also to earlier work in the literature. Alternative materials can then be tested directly for comparison against the chromate model. From this scientific basis, the way in which current accelerated tests function will be re-evaluated and further developed to provide improved realism for lifetime prediction.
