This proposal concerns an application for a three year grant to establish a research project in the field of absorption and diffusion of multicomponent mixtures in microporous materials and catalysts. FTIR microscopy with polarised infrared radiation will be used as a new method for studying co-absorption and counter-diffusion in microporous materials on the molecular level. Absorption and diffusion of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures will be studied with emphasis on commercially important separation processes and shape-selective catalysis. Fundamentals of host-guest interaction will also be explored. Additionally, in the later part of this project we will investigate the use of FTIR microscopy in the study of the species absorbed in catalysts, particularly in catalytic distillation. The research wil be supported by a very active zeolite research team at UMIST which will carry out complementary theoretical calculations and catalytic studies. Results from the project will be correlated with data obtained using state-of-the-art up-take methods in collaboration with Crossfield Catalysts and Prof. L.C.V. Rees (University of Edinburgh).
