Summary on Grant Application Form
SCIOS is a collaborative project between Heriot-Watt, Glasgow, St. Andrews and Edinburgh Universities that has been running since 1990. It has as its objectives:(I) To pursue research into the physics, materials sciences, fabrication and packaging technologies underlying the development of optical and optoelectronic devices,(II) To combine the results of (I) with new system architecture concepts so as to realise free-space parallel optical information processing demonstrators experimentally. This proposal covers continuing work on III-V semiconductor devices, diffractive and micro-optics, spatial light modulators and solid-state lasers, plus new activities in the areas of smart pixel arrays (including hybrid silicon/InGaAs devices) and high power semiconductor lasers. In addition, new system architectures are to be explored and a range of novel demonstrators will be constructed.
