Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal focuses on new solid electrolyte systems based on Bi4V2011, which have high conductivitys at relatively low temperatures. A wide range of divalent metal substitutions for vanadium are possible including Ni, Co and Cu giving solid solutions with a general formula of Bi2V1-xMex05.5-3x/2 (where Me is Ni(II), Co (II) etc.). This family of solid electrolytes have been termed BIMEVOX.We intend to investigate the synthesis of various BIMEVOX systems with a view to understanding the complex polymorphism shown in some of the solid solution systems. Characterisation will be carried out using powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and ac impedance techniques. Single crystal X-ray diffraction will be used to investigate structures Variable temperature high resolution powder diffraction will be used to determine defect structure using these results likely mechanisms for ionic conductivity will be investigated and their relative energetics modelled.
