This collaborative programme, involving the Universities of Lancaster and Manchester, concerns the investigation and development of advanced low-complexity encoding and soft0maximum likelihood and soft near-maximum likelihood decoding techniques for block codes. The proposed research programme would be supported by practical DSP implementations. Thus implementation consideration will be an integral part of the study programme.The proposed research will bring together three important concepts which promise to make the soft-decision decoding of block codes as powerful and cost-effective as that of convolutional codes. These are: the application of trellis decoding to array codes (block codes with parity checks in two or more dimensions), which have trellises with significantly fewer nodes than non-array codes; the ability to represent general block codes as generalised array codes (GACs). which enables the use of relatively simple trellis decoders; and splitting of the codewords of the GAC into sub-blocks, which further simplifies the decoding complexity. The structure of these soft maximum trellis decoders (SMLTDs) enables the decoders of more powerful codes to be constructed from those of less powerful nested codes, and permits the construction of efficient combined coding and modulations schemes.
