Amine- and hydroxy- functional phenolic electro-polymer surface films will be prepared for compatibility with epoxy and urethane topcoat systems. The adhesion and cohesion of such systems will be compared to currently proven allyl-alkyd systems to confirm the relationship between wet and dry adhesion and anti-corrosion properties. The importance of water transport and trapping on the film properties, in conjunction with cathodic conditions which promote disbonding, will be studied to confirm the principle failure mechanism. In order to avoid potential substrate corrosion, similarly reactive electro-polymer films will also be prepared from vinylic compounds by reductive electropolymerisation.
