Summary on Grant Application Form
The behaviour of reinforced concrete beam/column connections is significantly affected by the presence (or absence) of links within the connection zone. That these links enhance dramatically the ductility of a connection subjected to seismic loading is well known, but there is increasing awareness of their importance in connections subjected only to gravity loads. Links influence the ability of the connection zone to sustain the shear stresses induced by the loading regimes, and further progress in understanding connection behaviour requires that their contribution be better understood, so that the point in the load history at which they become effective can be identified and the stresses which are developed in them properly quantified. The proposed research will undertake a series of laboratory test on beam/column connections using strain gauged reinforcement to make the detailed strain distribution measurements necessary for the resolution of the points outlined above. Parameters investigated will include number of links, reinforcement detail for the main beam tension steel, percentage of beam tension steel, loading regime and connection geometry. Associated with the tests will be a programme of numerical modelling undertaken at Cornell University using sophisticated computer software.
