Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will investigate, develop and implement a traffic model which operates at the microscopic level and is thus able to model the movement of individual vehicles in a congested and saturated network. This is to be achieved by building a highly parallel system in which each vehicle slot is represented by a process in the simulation. The project will develop new description of queuing, and arrival and departure pattern algorithms based upon direct observation of the behaviour of vehicles and their drivers in congested systems. The project will also investigate aspects of the implementation of the model on a highly parallel system, particularly the manner of communication between the processes which make up the system. The methods to be investigated include shared memory, distributed shared memory and message passing. The underlying hardware will provide these capabilities by means of virtual channel routing hardware and the use of resource channels.
