Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To measure interfacial area and drop size distribution data under steady and transient flow conditions. 2. Correlate data for use in design procedures for separators. 3. Determine the effect of the chemical composition of the oil phase on the dispersion characteristics of oil/water mixtures. 4. Produce a model to predict the drop size of oil/water dispersion produced in various pipeline layouts relevant to inlets to primary separators. (1) Measurement of drop size distributions for oil and water mixtures passed through high shear devices, such as pumps and chokes, and complex pipe geometries over a range of phase ratios. (2) Study of the effect of the oil phase composition on the dispersion characteristics and the phase separation rates. (3) Measurements using a range of pipe diameters to determine the effect of scale up on the data. (4) Study of the characteristics of oil and water dispersions under transient flow conditions. (5) (a) Analysis of the data to produce a correlation between the various parameters studied and drop size distributions. (b) Production of a model for the determination of drop size distributions at the inlet of a primary separator.
