Highly ionised atoms can be important constituents of very hot objects, such as stars, or earth-bound hot plasmas. A study of their properties can therefore be very useful in diagnosing hot plasmas. An electron beam ion trap or EBIT is an interesting device because it enables us to generate useful numbers of highly ionised atoms (any ion up to U92+ can be produced this way in an EBIT of sufficiently high electron beam energy) and to interact them with a very intense electron beam, so that both collision and spectroscopic studies are possible. The Oxford Group has built up expertise over a long period in precision laser and emission spectroscopy of highly ionised atoms, and with the completion of the Oxford EBIT, experiments are proposed in this area each of which will be the first of its kind to be carried out with an EBIT. The results will yield a sensitive test of relativist and QED effects for simple ions.
