Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme is a collaboration between Bath, Leeds, Nottingham and Reading Universities. The objective is to demonstrate a range of terahertz components, devices and subsystems utilising integrated metal-pipe waveguides. The active devices used will be resonant tunnelling diodes and Schottky barrier diodes which will be incorporated into wave-guides using a novel integrated device mount. The work will concentrate on several frequency bands throughout the terahertz region; 90-140GHz, 220-325GHz, 650-750GHz and 1.6THz. In each of these bands (except the last) we will demonstrate an oscillator, mixer and integrated downconverter. At 1.6THz only a mixer will be developed. To fully characterise the new components a comprehensive quasi-optical test facility will be established.
