Summary on Grant Application Form
The singlet and triplet state photophysics of a number of related series of novel phthalocyanine photosensitisers will be determined. Coupled with the physical properties of these compounds this data will be used to generate a quantitative structure/photophysics activity relationship, allowing us to rationalise the mode of action and the localisation properties of these sensitisers. Photobiological data for these compounds is available from ongoing studies with other groups. The interaction of a number of cationic, neutral and anionic sensitisers with model biological species, including lipid membranes, proteins and DNA, will be probed by luminescence techniques. The triplet state dynamics will be probed in these environments and the nature of PDT damage in these systems ie Type I Vs Type II, will be assessed. These experiments will be extended to include the study of the triplet state in whole cell extracts. Diffuse reflectance flash photolysis techniques will be developed to allow the study of these scattering preparations at the Laser Support Facility.
