Electro-dynamic braking of the induction generators of large wind turbines offers significant advantages in terms of simplicity and economy. However, implementation of this braking technique on wind turbines has not been possible to date. Major areas of uncertainty remain in the design and performance of elector-dynamic brakes on large, high inertia, generator drive trains. Precise control of braking torque is necessary over the entire braking cycle and this requires a detailed understanding of induction machine behaviour as well as the development of new circuits.The proposed project will investigate electro-dynamic braking of large wind turbines by a series of theoretical and laboratory studies culminating in site tests on a research wind turbine. Brakes using both passive and active components will be designed and tested. The aim of the project is to develop braking techniques suitable for application on the next generation of large wind turbines. Design criteria will be determined and techniques to predict performance developed.
