Projects at Durham over recent years have studied the flow over a Coanda flare developed by BP Plc. The Coanda effect is used in a wide range of industrial devices, but because the fundamental physics are not well understood, design involves much empiricism, and the methods are limited. The aim of this project is to investigate a wider range of fairly simple geometries and so to develop computation methods which can be used as reliable design tools. The experimental investigation will draw on the experience already gained in using optical flow visualisation and hot wire anemometry. Turbulence modelling experience and an existing method for calculating the high speed under-expanded jet flow will form the basis for the computational development. A final feature is the investigation of longitudinal vortices for which there is some evidence on Coanda flares.
