Summary on Grant Application Form
Over the last two years photorefraction in organic crystals and doped polymer films has been demonstrated. Organic photorefractors have substantial promise for applications through their photorefractive figure-of-merit and high sensitivity, the availability of many molecular variations, large area processability and low cost. In this proposal new organic photo-refraction media are to be investigated which promise significantly improved performance over inorganic materials. Novel polymers are to be synthesised in which the essential photoconductive and electro-optic groups are covalently linked to the polymer backbone rather than incorporated as previously as a mixture. Two synthetic strategies are to be investigated: (a) derivatisation of preformed polymers, (b) copolymerisation of electro-optic and photoconductive monomers. Electro-optic and charge transport elements will be chosen according to their literature precedence and synthetic feasibility. In particular fullerenes and fullerene derivatives will be incorporated covalently and as an additive, following the recent observation of high photo-conductivity and charge transfer complex formation in fullerene-doped polymers. The photorefractive performance of the new materials will be tested for sensitivity, grating efficiency and response time in poled thin films. Measurements will be made by transient grating and surface plasmon experiments, supported by studies of photo-conductivity, electro-optic coefficients and optical quality.
