Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent results in Oxford on the strain-rate dependence of the flow stress in the yield stress anomaly range of Ll2 alloys suggest that yielding occurs when the stress is sufficient for edge superkinks to bypass screw dislocations locked by cross-slip, and to overcome obstacles (probably forest dislocations), whose destiny increases with increasing strain. A variety of experiments will be carried out on Ni3(AlHf) and Ni3Ga alloys to complete and validate the model, including the orientation dependence of the strain-rate dependence, the effect of restrain at one temperature on the strain-rate dependence at another, the measurement of the strain-rate dependence close the yield point, the recovery rates and workhardening rates in the temperature range where slip on the cube cross-slip plane occurs, the relationship of these rates with those of inverse creep in these alloys, and experiments designed to elucidate the serrated yielding observed in the middle of the yield stress anomaly range.
