Preliminary studies have shown that the fluorinated analogue of polyisothionophitalene, ie polytetrafluorobenzo c thiophene, is a soluble, stable conjugated polymer which can be n- and p- doped. The solubility appears to derive from a non-planar backbone structure. A programme of synthesis is proposed that will enable us to explore a family of polymers based on PFBCT including copolymers and homopolymers with different substitution in and on the benzene ring and at the S- atom. These polymers will be fully characterised and their electrochemical and physical properties explored in detail. The aim of gaining a proper understanding of the fundamental physical properties of these polymers and their relationship to macro- and microscopic structure will be pursued through collaborations with other groups in the UK and Europe. Potential applications of these polymers in batteries, electronic and optoelectronic devices will be assessed.
