Summary on Grant Application Form
The initial part of the programme would be concerned with installing and commissioning a new draw frame (about one month). Blends of polypropylene (PP) and liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) would then be melt-extruded under conditions already established in a previous project (GR/F 58776) and drawn using a variety of methods. The draw frame could be operated using hot-plate, hot-pin or hot-rollers - or combinations, and multistage drawings could be carried out. Particular attention would be paid to differences in mechanical properties arising from the different drawing methods, to the number of drawing stages and to the temperature and draw ratio of each stage. Comparisons would be made with pure PP fibres extruded and drawn under equivalent conditions. Comparisons would also be made with PP/LCP blended fibres produced in our previous work, using a small-scale hot-plate draw frame. From these comparisons, drawing conditions providing the best enhancement of mechanical properties would be established, and insights at a molecular level would be sought on the influence of LCPs on the drawing of PP chains in fibre blends.
