Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to use our existing technique of x-ray microtomography to characterise damage in composites, either by direct imaging of voids or by the measurements of absorption co-efficient which can be used as a damage parameter. These measurements will be correlated with conventional metallography of strained specimens and parallel acoustic emission measurements. A straining stage will be constructed to allow in situ measurements of damage evolution during straining. Fibre fracture in long fibre MMCs will also be investigated using this technique. It will also be used to characterise a range of processing defects found with different MMC consolidation routes. Finally we will explore further developments and applications of microtomography in materials science.
