Summary on Grant Application Form
Liquid crystal materials capable of photopolymerisation and spreading as ordered films will be synthesised and their mesophases studied. Films of these materials will be deposited in vacuo on to heated or coded substrates and polymerised by UV light in situ. The resulting films will be characterised by x-ray difraction, AFM, optical microscopy and other techniques. It is intended to explore both relatively simple materials capable of such usage and also materials containing the diacetylene groups with a view to producing better X3 materials. Attempts will also be made to polymerise these materials as free standing films. The materials produced will also be studied using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique.
