Summary on Grant Application Form
1. Develop numerical procedure to simulate the interaction of steep waves with structures. 2. Compare results with slender body and second order different analyses. 3. Assess importance of effects higher than second order. 4. Investigate implications for the Case study. The project aims to develop a method for predicting the fluid structure interactions giving rise to the transient phenomenon of ringing . This has been observed experimentally when very steep waves encounter large diameter vertical columns, typically in the intertia regime of hydrodynamic loading where drag forces are negligible. The prediction will be based on a time domain simulation using a finite element fluid domain that is updated as the simulation proceeds. Accurate modelling of the behaviour near the singular interface between the free surface and the structure, and in regions of steep flow gradients in wave crests, will be achieved by means of a hierarchical mesh which adapts with the flowfield. Quadtree and octree methods permit fine resolutions in local regions, while being simple to generate and efficient in terms of computer storage. The finite element equations will be based on a variational principle. After convergence studies and validation of the methodology, results will be compared with those from a frequency domain second order diffraction analysis, and from a time domain simulation based on slender body and wavy lid assumptions. A program implementing the latter will be provided by WS Atkins.
