This project is a sequel to SERC/MOD GR/E69546 which has expired on 30 December 1991 and which has identified important gaps in the understanding of the dynamic behaviour of Kevlar and carbon filament wound tubes. Of particular importance is the mechanism for controlling the time to failure and its relationship to rate of loading. This work aims to conduct controlled burst tests on KRP and CFRP tubes with and without plastic liners specifically at strain rates in the range 10-5 - 10os-1 and at -45oC, 20oC and 70oC where data is lacking. The results will be used to validate progressive failure models incorporated in a reversed laminate analysis which has recently been developed by the applicant. When these are combined with the results of the previous grant it will be possible to derive universal dynamic ply properties such as modulii E11, E22, G12, Poisson's ratio 12 and constitutive equations of stresses as functions of strain, strain-rate and temperature.
