Summary on Grant Application Form
To realise wide bandwidth, high spectral purity optical phase lock loops (OPLL) using semiconductor lasers. To investigate the use of opto-electronic integrated circuits (OEIC) to realise short propagation delay OPLLs in convenient format for system applications. Progress:Optical phase lock loops (OPLL) provide a technique for synthesising a precise (zero Hz error) optical frequency from an optical reference frequency and an electrical offset frequency. They have applications in dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM) optical networks, as demodulators in advanced optical communication systems and for millimetre-wave modulated optical signal generation in optically controlled microwave systems. The relatively wide (MHz) linewidths of semiconductor lasers pose formidable difficulties in realising OPLLs. In this project we seek to overcome these difficulties using two approaches.First, we have devised a novel loop architecture, the optical injection phase lock loop (OIPLL),which enables the limitations of loop propagation delay to be largely overcome (l).Second, we are working in collaboration with GEC-Marconi Materials Technology (Caswell) on the design of OPLLs in opto-electronic integrated circuit (OEIC) format, as a means of constructing conventional OPLLs with acceptably low loop propagation delay for moderate linewidth (less than 10 MHz) semiconductor lasers. 1.
